The Butterfly and the Tsunami, Lauren Davies

Type: Public artwork, papier maché, photographs, fiberglass
Date: July 2008 - October 2008
Collaborators: Artist Lauren Davies, California Academy of Sciences and Cool Globes.
Description: I was tasked by the California Academy of Sciences to issue a call for proposals for an artist to partner with the Academy's research collections in the Cool Globes campaign; a traveling public art exhibit to raise awareness about solutions to climate change. Much like the "San Francisco Hearts" project, artists were commissioned to make original designs on fiberglass globes that would be installed around San Francisco and travel around the country. We selected fine artist and curator, Lauren Davies and her project, "The Butterfly and the Tsunami". She was one of only 3 local artists that were part of the city-wide campaign and brought her unique expression and talent to the project's medium by incorporating real photographs of butterfly specimens from the Academy's entomology collections with storm imagery from NOAA and NASA.  The public art piece was installed at the front steps of the Academy in time for its grand opening in September 2008. It joined the other San Francisco Globes on a nationwide tour. PRESS coverage
